Who is going to define reality? Who is going to say what it is?
There is a great contest over this issue.
To the Greek mind, there is no difference between truth and reality. The New Testament word for truth(aletheia) means both truth and reality. Spiros Zodhiates defines aletheia as: truth, reality, the unveiled reality lying at the basis of and agreeing with an appearance, the manifested, the veritable essence of matter; as opposed to an appearance without reality (The Complete Word Study Dictionary, New Testament).
Jesus says of Himself: “I am the way and the truth and the life (John 14.6 NASB),” He is saying that He is ultimate reality, the complete manifestation of God and His Kingdom to mankind. All matter (all creation) has come from Him. Jesus says of the devil: “He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies (John 8.44 NASB).” Jesus is saying that ultimate reality is not found in the devil nor in anything that has come through him.
We may say that we have little or no faith. Faith comes. Faith comes as we hear the voice of God in the Word (Romans 10.9-10). Or, we could say that faith comes as we receive the actual reality of God and His Kingdom via the Word (Francis Frangipane). The voice of God in the Word is reality. Faith comes by hearing the reality of God and receiving it. Something of the actual substance and reality of God and His Kingdom is imparted to us and then through us.
Here’s just one practical application for the believer and Christ-follower. Is sickness real? Is sickness based in reality? Well ….
Sickness is a manifestation of the fall of humanity. It is sourced in sin and rebellion. The fall and all of its consequences were instigated by the devil, the father of lies. No truth is in him (John 8.44). So, sickness does not come from God or His Kingdom. Thus, it is not based in ultimate reality. There will not be a trace of sickness in the fullness of the Kingdom in the new heavens and the new earth. In the now, the mind-altering news is that Christ came to bring an elevated manifestation of His kingdom. He told us to proclaim His kingdom with attending works of healing and deliverance. Even raising the dead.
- He … gave them power and authority over all the demons and to heal diseases. And He sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to perform healing(Luke 9.1-2 NASB).
- “Heal those in it (the city) who are sick, and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you’ (Luke 10.8-12 NASB).”
- Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father (John 14.12 NASB).
So really (that is, in reality), sickness is not true in this sense – it is not sourced in the ultimate reality of our Creator and His Kingdom. It does not represent His nature or His original intent. Nor will it be experienced when all things are reconciled to Christ (Col. 1.19-20), and the entire creation is set free into the full liberty of the children of God (Romans 8.18-25). And concerning the now, Jesus’ Kingdom begins to invade the realms of sickness and bondage. We have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the power of the age to come (Heb. 6.4-5 NASB).
The devil says, “Get real. This is the way it is.” Jesus says, “He’s a liar. Let Me show you ultimate reality which trumps him.”
Truth is HUGE.
“And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (Jn 1:14
NASB)
In Proverbs 8:7, Wisdom says, “For my mouth will utter truth…”, Isa 65:16 mentions “the God of truth” twice, and Philippians 4:8 stresses, “Finally, bretheren, whatever is true, … let your mind dwell on these things.”
It’s also key to answering a question that I believe is at the root of America’s current woes, “Is it a baby?”
